What is Ascend?

Ascend is South Africa’s first homegrown functional fitness race that blends running and workout stations in a high-energy, competitive format. Designed to test endurance, strength, and determination, participants complete 400m or 200m runs (depending on division), followed by eight functional workout stations—challenging both body and mind.

Set in iconic South African locations—from malls to expo centres and even airplane hangars—Ascend delivers an immersive, world-class race experience with an undeniable local spirit.

With a consistent format across all events, Ascend features a national leaderboard where athletes can track their performance and compare results. The race season culminates in a national championship, bringing together the top competitors to battle for the title.

Two divisions make Ascend accessible to all—whether you’re a Rookie or a Pro, you’ll push your limits without feeling out of your depth.

Rookie Division: Shorter runs, simple movements, and no experience needed—just, show up and give it your best!
Pro Division: A true test of strength, endurance, and fitness—built for those ready to go all in.

Compete solo or in pairs, so you get the race experience you want.

Race Format

Division Categories:
  • Individual men, Individual women, and pairs (M/M, F/F, or M/F) for both divisions
Notes:
  • Pairs Divisions – Stations are split however you want, all running is done together.
  • Mixed Pairs – Athletes use Men's weights for all stations (Rookie Men's weights for Rookie Division, Pro Men's weights for Pro Division).
